Fishermen Youth Soccer (FYS), based in Gloucester, MA, is a volunteer organization that provides boys and girls ages 4 to 19 with the the opportunity to play soccer in the fall and spring. Our mission is to instill a love of the game of soccer and to provide instruction and playing opportunities in an atmosphere that is supportive, fun and developmentally appropriate, and that increases in competitiveness as children are ready for it.

Founded by a small group of parents in 1975, we depend on volunteers; our coaches, fundraisers, webmasters, registrar, program directors and all board members volunteer their time so that kids have the opportunity to play soccer. When you register please let us know you if you are able to help out, or contact Tom Weber at webermail@yahoo.com.

Following are brief descriptions of our travel and academy programs:

Travel Program

Players ages 9 and up can join our U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 travel teams, playing teams from (mostly) nearby towns that are part of the Essex County Youth Soccer Association (see ECYSA.org). Games are on Saturdays and each team's coach generally offers one or two weekday afternoon / early evening practices per week. In addition to regular practices and games, we offer clinics and tournaments for players.

Players of all skill levels are welcome, and the ECYSA is structured to ensure a range of opportunities from recreational to highly competitive. U10 teams include players of all skill levels; U12 to U18 teams are tiered by skill level.

FYS Academy

For children ages 4 to 9, the FYS Academy is comprised of Little StrikersU6 CoedU8 Girls & U8 Boys. Programs meet Saturdays, and U6 and U8 programs also meet one weekday afternoon per week at 5pm. The FYS Academy features developmental activities and scrimmages. Activities emphasize fun and ball skills, while scrimmages guide children in the basics of game play and offer an age-appropriate competitive experience in a supportive, community spirited environment. In scrimmages, teams are small so that all players get many opportunities to dribble the ball (“touches”). We teach players to support their teammates and control the ball as a team, rather than just “kick It”.  When grouping children for scrimmages, we strive for balanced games that increase in competitiveness as players are ready for it, and we do our best to minimize the need for kids to wait on the sidelines as subs.

On Saturdays, our FYS Academy U6 and U8 sessions are led by Gloucester High School head coach, Armando Marnoto, an experienced coach of children of all ages and recipient of the MA Youth Soccer Association Coach of the Year award. His leadership provides guidance for our FYS Academy coaches and ensures that children across the academy are learning skills and tactical knowledge that progresses from season to season.

FYS Academy sessions are held at Lower Magnolia Fields at 550 Western Ave in Gloucester.
